I try to get to NYC a couple times a year and usually I go to a museum and I visit Chelsea. Yesterday was the opening of the Chain Mail show in Boston. Ten artists were invited to invite 10 artists whom they admire. Then those 10 artists invited 10 more and those invited 10 more etc. etc. Over 1200 pieces of art were installed at Samson Projects on Harrison Ave. in Boston. Last night I started Phase 2 of the Danforth site specific piece that I am doing with the Teen Docents. We are now working in the stairwell that leads from the museum to the education area. Our first order of business involved placing sticky vinyl stencils on the wall and painting our main background color. Tonight we'll screenprint textural elements and start to paint in the projected doodles.

Last Tuesday, work continued on the Lesley University mural that I have been commissioned to create, in collaboration with the graduate students in Robert Shreefter's class. I screen printed parts of the image, and then projected segments of doodles onto the wall. Students helped me to paint and screen print according to my design. Our last painting session will most likely be this coming Tuesday

Images from last night's Intuitive Painting class at the Arlington Center for the Arts. My students are working independently now. Monoprints using Golden acrylic OPEN paints, photocopy transfers using Citrasolv cleaner, and stenciling were all processes that kickstarted some exciting experimentation.

Today was my first painting day at Lesley University. Yesterday, I gridded the 10' x 25' wall using a snap line. I outlined the major shapes with pink chalk. I am going to start work on the wall installation (otherwise known as a mural) at Lesley University this week. Here is a working drawing for the imagery. I have gridded the drawing so that I can convert the image to the size of the wall, 10 feet high by 25 feet long. I found 2 sheets of 40" x 60" heavy foam core board in my garage, wrapped in plastic. There was no mailing label or other ID. I left them there for 2 weeks thinking that perhaps they belonged to our tenant or someone else. Nope. So I figured that they were a gift from the Art Fairy. I have been playing with my new acrylic mediums, re-working older pieces and I feel they are much improved. This one is 30" x 30" and uses a combination of gel medium on top of latex and acrylic paints. Untitled thus far.

For many women artists, Louise Bourgeois has been a role model and an inspiration. She died this May at the age of 98. The obit in the NYT is worth reading. Long live Bourgeois!

In Chelsea this weekend, although the galleries were closed on Sunday, I just loved the crazy postings all over the buildings. I was as much in love with what I saw ON the buildings as I was with what I saw through the gallery windows. Lots of food for thought and creation.

This is another wall from the room installation in my studio at the Vermont Studio Center.I am thinking of calling it Octomom. This is a reference to the shape as well as to the reference to the origins of the glyphs - enlarged doodles from my son's high school notebooks.

I have been spending the last two weeks at the Vermont Studio Center. One of my main goals was to paint an installation directly on to the studio walls. I have been eyeing "Our Lady" for months, and finally managed to get these photos to share with you.I love her! She is right on our main drag, Mass Ave., and she looks out at all the passing traffic. I have been seriously playing with acrylics and creating some layered backgrounds. Mixing a little paint with acrylic gloss medium gives you some interesting depth. Painting out areas using opaque acrylic and house paint creates some interesting shapes.

I am very happy with a brand new storage area for my work. An oil tank was recently removed from my basement studio space, so I had a friend build much needed vertical storage racks. In the process, I weeded out older work, consolidated things, gave away old plexi pieces via freecycle, and generally find myself reinvigorated by the process.

My recent studio activity involves starting with a strong overall background color and riffing with the doodle shapes.Today I completed 3 of these. I am setting some goals - to use similar shapes in each, to use a silkscreened image in each, and to keep things clean and minimal - this one does not come easily to me!

If you've never seen this film, I highly recommend it. It will depress the hell out of you, but the images are astounding and profound. 1982, and yet it is extremely contemporary in feel and subject.

I paint with acrylics because they are so versatile. They are easy to clean up with soap and water and can be thinned with water to resemble watercolors, or they can be thickened to look like oils - and SO much more.In general, I would advise staying away from "how to" art books, but I highly recommend Rethinking Acrylics by Patti Brady.

Swept into NYC yesterday for an art fix, a one-day whirlwind of MOMA and the Whitney.Highlights at MOMA included the Daniel Ortega exhibit. Some pieces were hilarious and poetic: the room with three plastic yogurt containers tacked to three walls, and nothing more. Elegant: the hanging shapes of plastic insulation material that looked like a whale.The Bauhaus exhibition felt strangely familiar.

Just to explain how the final piece came into being: I prepped the wall, then cut shapes from orange and white sticky vinyl (random colors!) to use as a mask for the yellow paint. (Behr "Disney" yellow!)When I finished painting yellow, I pulled off the orange vinyl to reveal really nice, clean edged shapes.After the yellow, I projected the glyph shapes onto the wall and painted them using acrylic
